Freshman Planning Guide: 6 Weeks Before Move In

You’re probably pretty invested in having the best possible summer at this point—but we’d bet there’s also a (responsible) part of your brain that’s thinking something like: “What should I be doing 6 weeks before I move?” With our six-week moving checklist, you can keep up with your summer plans while still making sure to get all the necessary tasks checked off your list. Go dig out those old notebooks and take note of what you should be thinking about for the next few weeks:

Get your email set up. If your school has sent you directions, set up your new college email. This is how you’ll receive information about class registration, upcoming events, move-in day, and so many other things. Log in every few days or set up mobile access on your phone so it’s even easier to check frequently.

Design it out. Your dorm room is where you’ll be at the end of each day, whether to spend all night writing papers or to binge on movies with your friends—so make it great! Head to our Bed Visualizer or book a free consultation to get some help from the experts.

Bedding bliss. Consider what colors, patterns, and design styles you like, then begin shopping for your bedding. This is where the Pinterest board that you made a few weeks ago comes into play! Narrowing down your favorite vibes can help you decide what style to go with when buying your pieces (such as bedding, sheets, tapestries, and bigger wall prints).

Buy big. While you’re deciding on your bedding, you should also be thinking about all of the bigger items you’re going to need, like trunks, rugs, pillows, and more. Consider the same colors and designs that appealed to you for bedding. Check to see if you can have things mailed directly to your dorm’s mail room for pick-up on move-in day. This can be especially convenient if you’re flying to school, or if you have a small car that can’t fit everything you’re planning to bring.

Laptops are your college lifeline. If you need a new computer, start shopping around for laptops online or in stores. (If you already have one, make sure it’s working properly.) Figure out which operating system you prefer, and check if your college recommends one or the other. Decide what features you want and which one will be best for you before dropping all that money. Once you pick one, start playing around with it and getting it set up before you leave, just in case there’s any problems.
